Tactics Development for Radar Stations
نویسنده
چکیده
Radar warning systems are found in all modern fighter aircraft and their main purpose is to warn pilots of enemy military units such as radar stations, aircraft and missiles. Testing these systems for fighters in real life is an expensive, complex and somewhat dangerous task. Hence engineers aim to test these systems in an artificial environment by the use of software in order to simulate hour-long, realistic scenarios. This thesis investigates the topic of bringing human-like behaviour and tactical reasoning to radar stations in the above mentioned software. Focus is on the use of a rule-based system and the result of this evaluation shows that these declarative systems have several advantages compared to conventional, procedural programming. This is especially true if tactics and behaviour of units are to be changed frequently and easily. This thesis was commissioned by SaabTech, part of the Saab Group.

Hiding from and surprising an opponent are tactics that have been used in warfare throughout history. They were features that aircraft originally possessed when they were first used in military operations. n 1965, a U.S. Navy airplane was shot down over North Vietnam by a Soviet surface-to-air missile. Shortly thereafter, the Navy sought countermeasures and tactics that could mitigate this threat. It became apparent that tests of airplanes in the presence of threat simulators could provide many answers to tactical problems as well as enhance and complement countermeasure system design and develop...

Wind direction measurements collected at 4 in-situ anemometers were compared with the WERA HF radar over a 20 month period to assess the accuracy of the radar system. The radar data was interpolated onto the less frequent in-situ time series. An unexpectedly large RMS error of 58.9° was calculated over all stations. A complex correlation coefficient of 0.65 was obtained. An improved correlation...

The Kestrel Interactive Development System (KIDS) provides knowledge-based support for the derivation of correct and efficient programs from formal specifications. We trace the use of KIDS in deriving an algorithm for solving a problem arising from the design of sonar and radar signals. This derivation illustrates algorithm design, a generalized form of deductive inference, program simplificati...
